The 2012 Mynydd Troed fell race was chosen this year as the first race in the inov-8 WFRA Open Welsh Champs, and also as the Welsh Inter Regional Champs. 81 runners made the hazardous journey to the Black Mountains, where very strong winds, freezing rain and fallen trees caused the organisers to shorten the race by missing out the second hill, Mynydd Llangorse.

The 2012 Sugar Loaf fell race was a late inclusion in the South Wales Winter Series, so Winter decided to make a comeback for the day. A snow flurry on the summit was enjoyed by some and endured by others, but made the rocky terrain a bit slippery and tended to slow race times.

The Waun Fach fell race in the Black Mountains starts at the Castle Inn at Pegenffordd on the A479. Descending slightly on tracks at first it then ascends Rhiw Trumau to the saddle then up Pen Trumau and Waun Fach. The lovely flowing descent down Y Grib is one of the hgihlights of the route, before the short sting to finish on Castell Dinas.

The Llantony Fell race is a short but steep outing starting at the Priory at Llantony in the Black Mountains. It climbs up to the Offa's Dyke ridge, along this northwards for around 1km and then decends Loxidge Tump. 400m of ascent and descent in only 5km of running helps make this a litle gem.

Offa's Orror is a charcterful off road running event, organised by Chepstow Harriers, on and around Offa's Dyke in the lovely Wye valley near Tintern. At 20km in distance and with a height gain of around 700m it's tougher than many fell races.
